Christmas Break

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

School is finally over for the semester and the snowboarding has began. After taking a grand total of 7 finals in 5 days, we had our Ugly Christmas Sweater Gift Exchange. We each drew a name and purchased the tackiest Christmas sweater out there had a PT potluck. Almost all of our teachers showed up and our anatomy teacher actually learned to play beer pong.  We even had a celebrity guest appearance from Daniel Cooper Doud, from the Central Coast of California.

After the party, we drove up to North Lake Tahoe to stay with my high school homie Carolyn. We got our first snowboard session of the year done with some fresh powder at North Star on Tuesday. Although forcasted for snow all day, we had mostly clear skies and the crowds weren’t too bad. I finally got to try out my new Liquid Force beanie. It has a fleece liner inside and kept my head nice and toasty. Although I miss wakeboarding, snowboarding is a good way to stay in shape and cross train for the upcoming wakeboarding season.

Hope everyone has an amazing Christmas and a Happy Holiday!

Winter is Here!!

Monday, December 7th, 2009

As much as we love to wakeboard, most of the LF Girls love to snowboard as well.  The last few weeks the stormy clouds have sent down some white fluff for us to play in!  I love getting all bundled up and cozy and running around in the snow like a little kid on a king sized Kit Kat.  Snowboarding is a great way to stay in shape in the off season.  Also, snowboarding skills transfer to wake boarding very well weather your strengths are rails, jumps, spins, flips, style , control, or all of these components.  I hate being cold when I wakeboard so there is nothing better than being warm and cozy while doing the same thing on the snow.  Have a wonderful Holiday Season!

Physical Thearpy School

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Hey Everyone! Just wanted to let everyone know that physcial therapy school is awesome! I have a week before my finals for my first semester of my first year. A typical week for me at school starts on monday morning at 9am. I have a human movement class where we discuss the neurological function of the body. Then I have patient professional interaction where we learn about ethics and legal issues of phyical therapy. Then I have a measurement and techniques class where we measure joint ranges of motion and muscle strength on each other and pretend that we are patients. I do this all over again on wednesday.

Tuesday and Thursdays we have Research methods from 9-10 and then Pathokinesiology from 10:30-3. Research methods is just as boring as it sounds. Pathokinesiology is my favorite class though becasue  we talk about body structures, such as the knee, and problems with that area, such as an ACL blow out. We just finished most of our course material today and we have finals from Dec. 14-18th.

Fridays are my favorite day. I have Advanced Anatomy from 9- 2pm. This class is exciting because we get to go into the cadaver lab and actually see everything we learn about on dead bodies. This may sound weird or gross to some of you but it is incredibly interesting and cool be able to learn a structure, feel it on yourself, and actually see what it looks like underneath your skin instead of from a book. Then after I get out of the lab, I drive to the river and strap on my wakeboard and ride with the Sacramento State Wakeboard Team. The water is amazing on the river and it is such a good release of stress to go and shred after all of my school and exams.

Since I have been at school I have made some really great friends. There are 34 of us in the program and we see each other all day every day. I also joined a flag football team, something that I never thought I would do because I HATE FOOTBALL. It gave me a new appreciation for the sport in general and I kindof understand it know…

Hope everyone is doing well out there. Keep riding as much as you can and try to have a fun winter break, whether you are snowboarding or travelling somewhere warm to wakeboard.

Sincerely,

Shelby Kantar

As the water trickles down the snowy mountains of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, dams are constructed to create aqueducts distributing water throughout California. Water is mostly plentiful in Northern California and the North generously supplies Southern California with over 50% of our water supply. Water is moved 444 miles, up 3000 ft to traverse up the Tehachapi Mountains through aqueducts, siphons, pumps and tunnels to reach it’s destination in beautiful Southern California.

Southern California’s desert conditions can cause dilemmas when finding quality water for drinking and more importantly glassy water to ride on. There are only a few spots to ride in Southern California so the WSR has been exploring our zone to discover new spots to ride. During our road travels through the years we’ve driven past Pyramid Lake numerous times while going over the Grapevine, questioning it’s wakeboarding capabilities. We finally decided to round up the troops and test his mysterious reservoir’s ridding potential. Eddie Valdez, Justin Fisher and I decided to camp the night before near the lake. When we arrived we noticed the camp had an eerie feeling, like a creepy Friday the 13th movie, man- eating bugs included. Being one of the only two groups of campers in the entire site didn’t help. Our fears quickly vanished after one of the friendly park staffers provided us with bug repellent and saved our lives. The combination of bugs and Eddie’s random mix ass-blast’n left us a bit sleep deprived.

In the morning photographer Nick Meistrell met up with us at our camp and Eddie made a five star breakfast with eggs, sausage and bagels to prepare for our day in the wakeboarding office. When we arrived at the dock to meet up with the rest of the crew consisting of the WSR vets Randall Harris and Ricky G, we quickly noticed the lake was about as butter as it gets. Randall, Ricky, Eddie, and I rode and Justin showed off his PWC driving skills running chase for Nick. The conditions were perfect all day including crystal clear water that has more than 20ft visibility, ideal for fishing, one of many WSR’s hobbies. The depth of Pyramid Lake is 355 ft containing 30lb+ striped bass, Justin and Eddie ended the day with catching a few trout…

After our great adventure, we have officially found another spot in southern California to ride and fish. In addition, Nick’s creativity combined with the mysterious beauty of the lake resulted with these exquisite photographs.
